A Beautiful Wedding - Scott and Tori - 28th Nov' 2014

I first photographed Tori when she was about 4 ...cute as a button with her identical twin Georgia. At the time I worked with their Mum selling Billiecart clothing for children and our kids were all good friends. A few years later at their 21st I met Scott...I think they had been sweethearts from the moment they spotted each other at high school....it wasn't long after that Scott rang me with a request ... "would you please come and photograph our engagement (Tori doesn't know)....Im taking her back to the backyard that we met in and I'm going to propose" .

It was the most gorgeous thing to witness and unbelievably romantic. The garden was a circle of tealights and Tori of course said 'yes'. The wedding was planned for a time when they would be back from their new home in LA and the date was decided - Nov 28th 2014.

We woke to a beautiful spring day with a perfect temperature....the morning was a bustle of beautiful girls getting ready ....6 bridesmaids and 3 flower girls at the Horgan house ...while the groomsmen got ready at the Marshall's. At 3.30 everyone arrived at the Monastery for their beautiful ceremony....everyone then headed up to Mt Lofty House for the reception and a celebration of the lovely newlyweds....here is a sneak peak of the day....wishing Scott and Tori a wonderful future ...

All I want for Xmas is.....

Xmas is nearly here....again....and I clearly remember writing a pre-xmas post last year like it was yesterday. Its been such a huge busy year for me and the studio or at least it was until a couple of months ago!....

Having run a couple of promos this year I had a large number of shoots booked for the 3rd term school holidays....12 in all which seemed to be manageable or so I thought!

While shooting one of my gorgeous Jesse Brown families, about 4 shoots in (and 3 of them in Belair National Park) I had what seemed to be a fairly unremarkable fall!. I was walking backwards (a common occurrence in this job) , stepped back on my right leg , then swung around as I took a step back with my left leg only to find I was stepping into mid air and off a small bank which was just under a meter high. With the normal industry reflex move, my camera was held in the air and my left leg took the full brunt of the fall. Naturally it pretty much caved in and I assumed that from the pain and the position it was in, and not being able to move my leg or my foot that I must have broken it!. My clients called an ambulance and I called the family for help and in the ensuing half an hour I decided to finish the shoot....which was the best form of pain relief I could muster up.

After arriving at Flinders, having X-rays, finding out that I had damaged ligaments and a chipped kneecap I headed home with a massive splint on my leg, crutches  and an orthopaedic appointment in a couple of days and lots of pain relief!.

That week that followed is something I will probably never forget !

Firstly, having never really hurt myself before, I just kept on working with the 'this isn't going to stop me' attitude. It was a slightly unrealistic attitude because I really couldn't do anything that required arms or legs. I tipped over or broke more cups and glasses than I have ever done before...and had the unenviable task of constantly asking for help (which I have also never been comfortable with)....I couldn't move off the couch and by the end of that first week when I did have to I would then have to howl for half an hour!

During this time I had my Mum and my husband by my side the whole time...as I couldn't safely walk without someone else in the house.

Hospital appointments were pure hell. Getting in and out of the car with a splint on is like an acrobatic trick!....going anywhere was energy sapping and excruciatingly painful and I kept wondering why everyone else looked pretty OK with their injuries. A particularly low day was having to walk on crutches from Flinders Private to the Medical centre to have an MRI and then find my way out of the building.

The following week I had 2 scheduled doctor appointments and had my MRI results on a disc that my endo printed out for me. The news was not great!

ACL completely torn, PCL partially torn, complex meniscal tear and complete deep MCL tear plus part of my kneecap torn off and my shin muscle also torn. Thats pretty much all the knee ligaments either partially or completely torn. I still couldn't feel my foot and the next day had an unusual stroke of luck

I fell down the stairs (a small set of stairs) in my house. My leg hyperextended and I felt a pop...I checked firstly that I didn't injure Mum who was in front of me and nearly got whacked with the crutch, and then that I didn't do myself any further damage. Much to my amazement I had an immediate relief of pain, my knee looked like it was in the right place for the first time since the accident and my foot was freely moving. The pain level went from 9.5 to about 5 and I couldn't believe how lucky that fall was. In conclusion I had also dislocated it and that was the excruciating pain.

It was all uphill from there...slow....but uphill!. My surgeon  found out that I'd been having treatment for frozen shoulder from an injury in Dec and insisted that I get that fixed first....that took a week but worked like a charm....then I had an arthroscopic repair about 2 weeks ago to fix the side ligaments and clean out the bone fragments...and I'm assuming that once its all better I'll have to have a knee reconstruction. Its now been 8 weeks and I can get around with one crutch but am expecting a big improvement over the next couple of weeks.

It all sounds awful and Ive had to reschedule all my shoots to spread out up until Xmas...but that is not what I'm going to come away from this thinking in any way....like all horrible experiences I have learnt a lot. People are more than happy to help and I can't tell you how wonderful it has been to spend lots of time with family and friends. The company and compassion I have received has been heartwarming. To those friends who have visited, shopped, dropped around for a cuppa, been my legs on shoots, massaged my leg, and brought me endless cappuccinos and food I can't thank you enough. I've had my washing folded up, dishes done, errands run and barely a complaint from my slaves (sorry children). I've missed birthdays and funerals and every other event along the way and will catch up once I can get to the shops.....but mostly I've had to slow down and chill out. Other than the inconvenience its been a self imposed holiday on the couch...not the best of scenery but definitely the best company. I'm especially grateful to Warren and my Mum who have really had a double workload on their hands and to my kids who have had to do a lot of cooking and shopping.

A special mention has to go to Roxy who hasn't left my side for 8 weeks and has only jumped on my leg a handful of times!

After a bit of thought I've decided not to postpone my next Mitcham Square stall on Thursday 27th Nov where I'll be selling Xmas Vouchers. These will be $150 on the day and are for shoots from Jan 20th until March 20th. They are a great present for those people that have everything. I'll be manning the stall for a couple of hours so drop by and say hi.

My fine-art workshop has been postponed until Feb/March when my leg is fully recovered

I will be doing a class or 2 for school kids (over 12) in the weeks leading up to Xmas once schools out....

I'd like to particularly special thank my lovely clients who have had longer waits that usual to get their prints!

I hope the lead up to Xmas is peaceful and fun for you all

I'm pretty sure mine will be and I'll be sharing a blogpost soon with pics from some of the recent family shoots....

In the meantime take care and I know what I'll be requesting from the big guy in red

a leg please.....a working/walking leg....that would be lovely! :)

PS have to add a couple of shots of the kids who have let me do the odd arty stuff with the camera on the odd occasion that I've felt like it!

October Workshop - for Mums and Daughters

This has been a busy year and I'm a bit behind with my blogposts but better late than never!....Its been an exciting and busy couple of months and now that Sept is pretty much booked out with lots of gorgeous families its time to get into gear for the next workshop which I have bumped back to October.

This time I have decided to encorporate a special someone who you will be able to carry on shooting long after the course is finished and I have resheduled Day 1 - (photoshoot day) of the course for the school holidays in order to make this happen.

Day 2 will be a week later when they are back at school and you can concentrate on the techy stuff without them.

So if you have a child/teen who loves to be photographed and you would like to have a beautiful artwork of her/him that you have created yourself then this is for you!

You can always bring a friend or family member who would like to model with you and I will have a child/model there as well.

I have 2 proposed locations which Ill release closer to the date along with some possible themes but they will be nature based and simple enough for anyone to do on their own at a later date.

You will need to bring....

Makeup and accessories and any special costuming (keep it portable)

Your camera

A digital SLR is preferred but not compulsory.

My model will be available if you can't get one.

'Entangled' behind the series

Entangled is an exploration of how closely entwined the human condition is with our natural environment. A natural progression from 2013 'Elements' Series where the girls were clothed by the Elements this years series is more psycological and explores the angsty relationship between humans and nature. The contrast between soft human skin and hard rock and wood is emphasised and the journey through time is depicted. Prossessed in a wet plate finish to further mirror the journey photography has also taken, the girls are at peace with their place within the natural world but the battle to get there is evident.

South Australian Professional Photography Awards 2014

What a fantastic week! The South Australian Professional Photography Awards are over for another year!

It was a rush of inspiration and talent this year finishing up with our night of nights last evening at Morphetville racecourse for the announcement of the winners.

This year I was the proud recipient of the Contemporary Photographic Art Prize which is very dear to my heart.

This beautiful prize is  also a very helpful and relevant addition to my business and to the direction that I am heading in. Two of the images entered were taken at my Adelaide workshop earlier this year and another Silver Award in Illustrative was from my Auckland Workshop so if you are interested in seeing how these artworks are constructed then make sure you book in for the next one in September where we go from the initial ideas through to the finished prints.

Congrats to the other category winners...Kate Ellis (Family) and next door neighbour, Ky Luu (Wedding), Hilary Hann (Landscape and Illustrative,) Terry Hann (Editorial), Karen Waller (Portrait), Shona Henderson (Travel) and to Peter Carroll (emerging member) and also to Aaron Citti for the Epson print award. Huge Congrats to David Sievers for taking the Commercial Category and the title of PPY with his outstanding work.

You can see all the beautiful images here

There are loads of people to thank for their help getting these images on the wall but special thanks goes to my models Lauren, Dani, Montana, and Hattie. They were all shot over the last year at Brownhill Creek and Robe and also on the side of the road. Thanks also to Grier Neilson for Montanas makeup, Jacqui Bateman for sharing some of her secret locations and The Supreme Goddesses for their love and support over the year. I'd also like to thank my family and my husband in particular for being so supportive of the studio (and building my new Springbank studio in particular)...Ive had lots of yummy meals cooked and been well looked after x

Also huge thanks to the models of the images entered into Illustrative and Portrait....Anya, Hannah, Charlotte, Jazmyn, Nathan, Kate, Maddie and Eloise.

I ended up with A Gold Award in the Contemporary Art Prize (and won it) and 6 Silver Awards out of 8 in Portrait and Illustrative (the other two were a respectable 78 and 79) so couldn't be happier....

This is 'Entangled'...

Biggest thanks of all goes to the sponsors - The Light Gallery - where the Art Prize Exhibition is on until the end of July .....you must see them in person and the lovely work of the other entrants....and the other category award winners will be on exhibition at the Wine Centre for the rest of July too.....here are the Contemporary Art Prize Images and my Artist Statement

My Glamour Studio

There is a lot to blog about from the last few weeks so I'm going to start by going backwards starting with yesterday where the studio got a workout doing a big commercial shoot for Marie Tantis makeup.

....long and short of it....it was a seamless, easy workout and as Marie transformed the girls one by one it kept popping into my mind that my new studio was made for Glamour!

The front studio has been renovated and is all swish looking but the with the back I've gone to great pains to keep it grungy....and oh what a joy it is to shoot in! The secret weapon is however, the attic.

While we were waiting for the last girls makeup, 2 of the girls who I'd already shot decided to model for me in the attic for the first time ...... they were fabulous and it exceeded my expectations....so thankyou to Destiny and Emma for their beautiful modelling and also to Zoe, Jen and Mady who did an amazing job showing off Maries talents....you can contact her on 0400730149 :)

'She-Beauty Shoots' cost $350 inc hair and makeup and are suitable for any age. Its something that every woman should do at least once in their life and you are guaranteed  to feel a million dollars when you see the result. Better still, get a group of friends together and have a party while you are at it. Its the perfect 'pre-formal' package and even more perfect for modelling your old formal dresses. Contact the studio on 0404208102 to make your booking :)

An Invitation to Create

This time last year I was sitting on a day like today trying to be still. A lot of things were happening in my world, some good, some learning related and I was desperately trying to find some award inspiration amongst all the chaos. Sometimes I think that having a creative job can also be a huge help when you have problems and sometimes launching into a new project can have a buffering effect that protects you from reality. But for whatever the reason I decided to focus on my personal photography to get me through this particular patch. Without thinking too much I contacted the girls who I had in mind for this project and with very little preparation headed down to my favorite spot to see where and how the day would develop.

It turned out to be a timely distraction.

I am of the opinion and some people would differ on this one, that creativity is not something that comes from you or your consious mind....rather it comes through you and its up to you to listen and take notice, and act on it.

I shot all the ideas that I had planned out and it wasn't until the model offered to get in the water, which was freezing, that I really got excited. I had mentioned it to her as a possibility but realistically it was really just too cold to do it at the location. Lauren, however, is tough and insisted.

The second my shutter clicked I knew that it was a game changer.

That instant all the uncertainty disappeared and I could clearly see the direction to go in.

I knew exactly what I was going to do with the shot and what it was going to look like.

She was in the water for about 2 minutes and I only took about 5 frames.

When I got back to the studio and uploaded them it confirmed exactly what I had thought and I quickly put pen to paper and wrote out the basis of 'In My Room' - Elements

I needed to develop a set for the Contemporary Art Prize at SAPPA and also for my SALA exhibition in August.

By the following weekend the whole series featuring 6 girls/elements was completed with each shoot taking less that 20 mins each.

The original image 'Element Water' has had a pretty amazing year and I am grateful for the journey she has taken me on...

Gold award in SAPPA

Silver Dist award in APPA

Part of a group exhibition with 'See Me' in New York where she was beamed onto a sky scraper.

Part of a group exhibition in Paris with See Me

Exhibited for SALA in Adelaide

Exhibited at Waverley House Gallery/Cafe in Adelaide

and exhibited as a finalist in the Emma Hack Art Prize at Adelaide Convention Centre

I knew following that click it would be a game changer but I had no idea to what extent or what doors it would open up.

This year I would like to share that experience with you.

I have decided to hold my Fine Art Workshop during the exact time I was so inspired last year and I invite you to come along and develop your own creativity in the place that has personally richly rewarded me.

This is a workshop where I will show you what I do and then help you realise your own ideas so its suitable for all forms of creative art. The idea is to develop the concept through to the finished print. Due to the intensive nature the numbers will be kept to a minimum so if you are interested please go to the 'workshop' tab and have a more thorough read.

WORKSHOPS

Who knows where it may lead....

Back in the Hood - Springbank Studio

Well this has been a whirlwind of a year so far and I now that I have a couple of days off over Easter its time to update the blog. I hope you are all having a restful Easter Break and enjoying time well spent with family and friends.

Our year started a little differently than most with my husband losing two of his close friends within a week of each other in january and our family shrinking from 3 + 1 kids at home to only 2. We had our first Xmas without our eldest son who was soaking up the culture in Japan and our other son split from his girlfriend who we were close to and so we went from 4 bods and a busy house down to 2 (one of whom lives out the back) so we were rattling around a bit and there was quite a strong feeling of loss. Anyone who has kids overseas will understand that its quite a big life change even though thankfully technology has made communication easy and we have been able to share his experiences with him.

So hardly a surprise that in the middle of Dec as much as I wanted to resign my lease for another couple of years in Goodwood something was stopping me. I couldn't put my finger on it but when the day came to make the decision I declined knowing that if circumstances were favourable I could always change my mind in March. All this despite having the best agents I've ever come across as property managers - Urban Commercial who I would highly recommend to anyone needing either an agent or a rental. As it turned out, there was something literally around the corner which was yet to be revealed.

About a week before Xmas a sign went up on the lovely little group of shops on the corner before the street where we live in Torrens Park. I had decided at this stage that I'd move my studio back into the empty bedroom wing of our house rather than waste the space and I assumed that it was a for lease sign and didn't think any more of it.

Later that week a friend who has a studio in the block told me that they were actually for sale which (having been forced to move 3 times last year, 2 due to landlord issues) perked up our interest in no small way. We went to have a look and could clearly see the potential. It took most of January and then Feb to organise the purchase and the owners very generously allowed us to start work on the shop we were going to occupy a couple of weeks before settlement. We then rented the other two back to them and have all settled in very nicely after a manic few weeks of work. Through all of this the generosity and help from Bill and Geraldine (Panprint) has been a blessing and we are very grateful to them for everything they have done. Our new neighbours Kate Ellis Photography, Magic Property Group and Crackerjack Computing have been fabulous and welcoming and we couldn't be happier in our new spot. Add to this a two minute walk to work, and three minute ride to Dani's school and being back in the 'hood' that the studio has spent the last 20 years in....Im still pinching myself. The studio itself is almost twice the size of my previous studios and Ive been able to custom design the rooms to suit what I do including having a indoor/outdoor painting garage which I can;t wait to use...its not quite ready yet but not far off.

Funnily enough, the week that I was moving out of Goodwood and into the back room at Torrens Park (and our insurance decided to do the repairs on our house)...work went crazy!....I had around 10 shoots in a ten day period...whilst supervising floors being ripped out and walls being redone. Most of the hard work was done by my wonderful husband who worked his butt off but the tradies also made it really smooth sailing by all turning up in the right order at the right time.....so huge thanks to John Zylstra from Nu-Image Homes and his team and Thistle Floors.

I think Im now organised enough to plan out the rest of the year....so thanks for your patience if you have been waiting to hear about VIP memberships, Photography Workshops, Exhibitions and the New Studio Opening they will be coming soon!!

Until then here is the new Gallery/Studio...the address is 148 Springbank rd, Torrens Park....if you are passing please feel welcome to call in and say 'hi' :)

A Beautiful day for the Beach

When Jane contacted me to organise a family photo session at the Beach and we picked our date and time I had no idea how lucky we actually were....beach sessions are the most free and relaxed of all the location sittings because thats what the beach is all about...we spent a delightful morning romping around under the jetty at Grange and I think I had as good a time as they did with 3 delightful children and a happy relaxed Mum and Dad. The day has been documented in a beautiful coffee table book and a set of gorgeous black and white framed prints for the wall. I know how treasured these will be in years to come as I look back on the ones I have when my children were around the same age at the beach and wish I could go back there just for a visit...those young years are busy ones and they fly past so quickly.

I say we were lucky because following this shoot the weather in Adelaide went off the scale and I still have shoots to do which had to be posponed because of high temperatures....I think we broke all records in SA for the hottest summer ever! Here are a few that I'd like to share :)
